ARE VIDEO GAMES REALLY BAD FOR YOU AND YOUR SUCCESS IN LIFE?

Aaaah, Games, you either love them or hate them.
There is always a big fuss when it comes if they’re bad for you or your kids, you would think they’re just a waste of time right? IT DEPENDS, Let’s find out.

The fact is that video games have a lot of negative aspects to them IF misused… but you’ll be surprised to know that normally, the things a video game can do for you are more positive than anything. Now, i might be a little bit biased, because i play games since i was 5 years old, i started with the NES and then followed up with every major (and minor) console that came out, as well as some PC gaming, and surprise surprise i’m a game developer, too! so i think i know a bit of stuff when it comes to the argument.

Let’s start with one of my favorite topics, SUCCESS & BUSINESS!

One would think that playing videogames automatically means that the person doing so is a failure and would imagine a guy\kid locking himself up in a dark room for hours and hours, discounting all kind of social interactions and physical activity (and personal hygiene, yuck!) that surely would benefit him, but i can tell you that is not ALWAYS the case.

Along with the 3rd, this 2nd Mega Man game might be my one of my favorite games of all time.

If you ask me what of my personality i value most, i would answer with: Resilience. And my ability to do hard things and be in stressful situations and environments. And would you believe me if i said that said skill\trait is something i acquired and then polished – while playing videogames? Exactly, that’s how.

My interminable and frustrating runs at Megaman, my adventures while playing Metroid, Ghosts’n goblins, Dragon Quest, all the difficult bosses and situations that i faced in these and endless other games helped me develop something very important…

BEING ACCUSTOMED TO FAILURE.

I’ve practiced FAILING and RETRYING in a “safe” space\environment, in which failing didn’t really matter as much as failing in real life, my defeats didn’t actually kill me, leave me jobless or without a roof upon my head, instead they forged me and gave me the WILL to try again and again, approaching every single enemy and situation with a different mindset and way of seeing things! and now i have incredible assets that are keeping me from feeling defeated, lost or demotivated when i fail at something – be it minor or major – in life.

I encourage you to pick up some of these (or other) games and actually give them a chance in your spare time, and see how much you can learn from them ABOUT YOU, and YOUR LIMITS.

So please, before categorizing videogames as “dangerous” in any way, shape or form, approach the whole argument with an open mind and the will to learn from something that is not actually “real” and see how many concrete and positive things these virtual experiences can give you, because it’s not just a training to real life, games can help people to cope with depression and\or bad feelings overall as well as narrate beautiful stories in an engaging way – in a way that only videogames can do.

Until next time,
Take care.
